SAINT ANTONIO – Recent health inspection reports revealed a bakery with a cockroach problem, insects crawling on bread and sweets at another market, and a Chinese buffet with a history of low ratings that scored even worse in a recent health inspectors visit.
Here’s what KSAT Investigates reporter Tim Gerber found behind the kitchen door.
Big buffet
The Grand Buffet on Block 600 of Southwest Military Drive performs again with a low score of 67. That’s 11 points less than the score she landed on Behind the Kitchen Door last summer.
This inspection found live and dead cockroaches throughout the store, flies were buzzing in the kitchen and even a live bird was flying around inside.
When inspected again in early December, inspectors found five repeat violations and several new violations.
Several refrigeration units did not work properly, so the food had to be disposed of. More food at the buffet had to be thrown away because it was either too warm or been out too long.
The company was told to hire someone to fix the refrigeration units, a plumber to fix leaking faucets and to clean the entire facility. A re-examination was ordered.
El Folklore Bakery
El Folklor Bakery, located on Block 6000 of Ingram Road in the Poco Loco Supermercado, received an 81 when it was inspected in December.
The inspector found uncovered shelves of baked goods stored next to an active construction/renovation site across from the bakery.
A bottle of Windex was found piled over ready-to-eat food. Several mosquitoes were also found in the food preparation area, numerous live cockroaches and a dead mouse in a trap.
The company was ordered to discontinue pesticides to get rid of the roach infestation and seal any holes. A re-examination was ordered.
The Fiesta Market
La Fiesta Market on the 7000 block of Marbach Road received an 83 and a re-inspection.
The inspector found uncovered cheese stored next to uncovered raw meat in the meat market’s prep area.
There was no hot running water in the grocery area, another sink would not turn on and the hand wash basin had no water at all.
Mosquitoes were found flying around in the bread box and crawling on the bread and sweets in the box. They were instructed to only sell prepackaged bread items until the box was cleaned and sealed to keep bugs out.
