Flint Joins 2 Other Michigan Cities on List of Tops for Bed Bugs

There are good lists and bad lists, and Flint just can’t get away from even the worst lists. Once again, Flint is in the top 25 of the Top 50 Bed Bug Cities in America, and they don’t represent Michigan alone.

Is there anything more disgusting to think about? Let me add to the pseudo-itch you’re experiencing now by telling you that a few Michigan cities are on the annual list Orkin. Each year, extermination and pest control experts compile a list of the worst cities for the little “shit” by reviewing treatment data from the metropolitan areas where they are located Orkin appeared the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2021 to November 30, 2022.

The city of Chicago is the pioneer this year. It’s probably not appropriate to congratulate them on a list nobody really wants to top, buy anyway…yay Chicago. New York followed at number 2 and Philadelphia at number 3.

How flawed is Michigan?

How are the bed bugs in Michigan? Unfortunately thrives. While we didn’t score a top 3 slot, we did make the top 10, with Detroit landing 6th on the itchy list. Grand Rapids secured 12th place in the Orkin rankings this year.

For the Genesee County area, Flint scored a top 25 spot for bed bug cities, peaking at #21. Finally, Lansing rounded out our spooky accomplishments, landing near the end at #42.

Now keep in mind that the report does not say that if you visit or live in these cities you will find yourself sharing the sheets with the little creatures. Bed bugs can really be found anywhere.

“Bed bugs are extremely resilient, which makes them difficult to control. As people begin to bulk up their travel plans this year, it’s important they know how to protect themselves through pest detection and appropriate control,” said Ben Hottel, Orkin’s entomologist. “Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are visible to the naked eye but are excellent at hiding. It is recommended that a trained professional be consulted upon seeing a bed bug introduction.”

Orkin mentions that bed bugs are 3/16 inches long, red to dark brown in color, and are primarily nocturnal insects that come out of hiding to take blood meals from sleeping humans. They can easily travel from place to place by holding on to items like your purse or even your luggage.

Be diligent when travelling… it can’t hurt to take a second and look for those little devils that might be hiding in that comfy bed.
