Important market trends

Growing demand for animal feed

The increased consumption of meat and meat products around the world has led to increased animal production that requires high quality feed in order to achieve better yields. Compared to conventional meat such as poultry and livestock, insects contain more protein and less fat. Therefore, they can be made for human consumption or as a source of protein in raw material mixtures. The need for grain and protein feed is likely to increase as the demand for meat increases.

For example, the cattle are fed about 6 kg of vegetable protein to get 1 kg of animal protein. The demand for high quality protein is increasing in the poultry industry and with it the demand for insect feed. Edible insects may have a similar demand as soy meal and fish meal, which are used as main ingredients in animal feed and aquafeed feed formulas.

The Asia-Pacific region dominates the market

In the Asia-Pacific region, the growing consumption of meat in recent years has increased the demand for nutritious insect foods. At the same time, investments by insect feed companies in the region fueled market growth. For example, in 2017 Protix partnered with Buhler Insect Technology Solutions, based in China, to improve insect food production in the country where Bühler installed a pilot plant to process fly larvae and mealworms using the former animal feed. Such developments in the country are fueling the revenues of the insect food market in China. Therefore, the region is expected to experience robust growth due to the increasing demand for insect food in various countries such as China, South Korea and Japan combined with increased demand for animal protein.
