MONTREAL, CANADA – Wilder Harrier, a Canadian dog food brand that makes sustainable and hypoallergenic formulas, released their first two puppy formulas in mid-May. The two formulas play on the existing formula for sustainable fish and the formula for farmed insects for adult dogs.

Wilder Harrier launched its first product in August 2019 that contains black soldier fly powder as the main source of protein. The company’s second product hit store shelves in late 2020, this time featuring an invasive Asian carp species found in Canadian and U.S. rivers and lakes.

Both diets are now available in formulations for puppies. Similar to the adult dog food formula, black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) used in Wilder Harriers Farmed Insect Formula for puppies are sourced from insect rearing facilities across Canada.

Insect protein is recognized by the brand as a hypoallergenic, digestible alternative to more traditional proteins in pet food. The diet is fortified with blueberries and thyme extract to provide antioxidants, as well as a prebiotic premix to support gut health.

Wilder Harrier’s new sustainable fish formula for puppies features a specific type of wild Asian carp that is sourced from the Illinois fishery.

According to the company, this type of freshwater fish was imported into the southern United States in the 1960s “to control harmful algal blooms and aquatic vegetation in certain aquaculture facilities”. The species has since migrated north, infesting surrounding lakes and rivers, and endangering local ecosystems.

This sustainable fish formula also contains blueberries and thyme as antioxidants and is fortified with DHA to aid brain and eye development. Because the company sources its Asian carp from the wild, the ingredient is free of antibiotics or pesticides, explained Wilder Harrier.
