The large schools of termites are back along the southern Mississippi with residents eavesdropping.
The crushing season starts just before Mother’s Day every year and this year is no different. This is the time of year when termites find new homes and establish new colonies.
The type of termite that many deal with is known as the formosan termite. In winter the termites are overpopulated and when May comes the termites colonize, as does population control.
Bay Pest Controls entomologist Bruno Milanese gives News 25 more details on Formosan termites. “These special termites don’t eat wood themselves, they are only reproductive and they don’t carry diseases and they don’t bite, but nobody really likes it when 100 termites land on them in the evening. You are attracted to the light. So when you turn off the lights on the outside of the house, close the windows that collapse and don’t hold it up. Most of them stay outside. They only fly for a short time. They lose their wings and then the male and females try to mate and then get back on the ground. “
Milanese says that all you need to worry about is Formosan termites when there are hundreds in your home.
