Rodents, bugs shut down eating places in El Monte, Covina, San Marino and extra – San Gabriel Valley Tribune

Health inspectors closed nine restaurants and one market in the San Gabriel Valley between April 12 and May 24.

According to reports from the Los Angeles County Department of Health, the food facilities health permit has been exposed to cockroaches, no hot water, rodents or vermin.

Food establishments whose permits are suspended must close until another inspection determines that the issues have been resolved. Closures can occur during routine and owner-initiated inspections, complaint investigations, and re-inspections.

The department did not disclose the types of cockroaches, rodents, or vermin – such as how many and where in the facility they were found – for all restaurants.

Institutions are rated with a number and a letter, similar to school reports. If a food company is closed because of cockroaches, rodents or flies, sewage problems or a lack of water, the company loses seven points in addition to the four points that are deducted in the event of serious health violations. Every time two major health hazards, such as unsafe food temperatures, are observed, the facility loses three additional points in its inspection rating.

Thai purple

Location: 27 N. Garfield Ave., Alhambra

Closure reason: cockroaches

According to a report on file with the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, an inspector observed:

  • A live German cockroach crawls into a plastic container on a rear storage shelf.
  • A live German cockroach crawls under the stove in the kitchen.
  • A dead German cockroach under the stove in the kitchen.
  • About five dead German cockroaches under the beer cooler in the front checkout area.

The company submitted a copy of Orkin’s latest pest control service dated April 12.

Tony’s bakery

Location: 14354 Olive St., Baldwin Park

Reason for closure: rodents

An inspector photographed a living rodent on the floor behind the vibrating oven in the food preparation area. A report also noted more than 15 old and new rodent droppings on the floor behind the rocking oven. A company representative presented the latest pest control bill dated April 12th.

Closing date: April 14th

Location: 933 S. Sunset Ave., West Covina

Reason for closure: no hot water – according to the inspection report, the hot water temperature was 74.9 degrees at the three-chamber sink.

Location: 4203 N. Tyler Ave., El Monte

Closure reason: rodents. According to a report, the inspector observed:

  • Rodent nest material and shredded paper behind the ice machine next to the mopping basin.
  • About five rodent droppings behind and next to the ice machine in the back of the facility.
  • About five rodent droppings in the corner by the door of the walk-in cooler in the back.
  • About two rodent droppings on the ledge under the electrical box.
  • About five rodent droppings next to the pink basket on the shelf in the back.
  • About 10 rodents fall on the shelf next to the plastic cup holder.
  • A rodent falls on the ledge on the wall.
  • A rodent falling to the floor next to the wooden rat trap in the beverage storage area.
  • About five rodent droppings on the floor around the hose next to the mopping basin.
  • About three rodent droppings on the lid of the paint can in the back of the facility next to the sink.
  • A rodent fell to the floor under the hand basin in the bathroom.

Location: 9505 E. Garvey Ave., South El Monte

Closure reason: cockroaches

An inspector found:

  • Two live adult cockroaches in the walk-in refrigerator.
  • A live adult cockroach in the cupboard across from the cash register.
  • Three dead cockroaches in the cupboard under the sink.
  • A dead adult cockroach in the closet under the sink.
  • Traces of excrement on the cabinet hinges.

In one report, the discovery of:

  • About four live nymphs and two live adult cockroaches crawl on the floor and a piece of cardboard next to the upright single-door cooling unit in the kitchen.
  • About two dead cockroaches on the floor next to the upright single-door refrigerator in the kitchen.
  • Piece of cardboard trash on the floor next to the upright single door refrigerator in the kitchen with a buildup of cockroach droppings.

Pepe’s finest Mexican food

Location: 1140 N. Azusa Ave., Covina

Reason for closure: vermin, wrong holding temperatures and insufficient water temperatures.

According to one report, the inspector found two live adult cockroaches in the floor sink under the ice machine, one dead adult cockroach on the floor next to the ice machine, and one dead adult cockroach on the floor in the chemical storage room.

The inspector ran one of the sinks with hot water for 10 minutes and found it only reached 98 degrees. The water from the sink for washing kitchen utensils must be at least 120 degrees warm.

The inspector also noted:

  • About 4 pounds of cooked pork top-loaded in front of the deep fryer for 24 hours at 52 degrees.
  • About 3 pounds of cooked chicken held on top loader in front of the deep fryer for 24 hours at 51 degrees.
  • About 4 pounds of cheese is top-loaded in front of the fryer for 24 hours at 53 degrees.
  • About 10 pounds of cooked beef and chicken taquito kept in the refrigerator drawer in front of the deep fryer for 24 hours at 52 degrees.

All food was disposed of voluntarily.

An inspector documented two live cockroaches on the wall and floor of the food prep area behind the long reach in the cooler. A report showed that, according to the operator, the plant had recently been used for pest control, but could not provide proof of service. The inspector also noticed more than three flies in the food preparation area
