The residents of a small coastal village are plagued by confident rats who have turned their peaceful community into a danger zone.
The problem has gotten so bad that some residents feel like prisoners in their own homes, too scared to go out because of the infestation and the risk of disease.
Villagers at Auchmithie in Angus on the east coast of Scotland have been overrun by confident rodents who are not afraid of people.
The problem has been around for a year but has become a bigger problem with the onset of warmer weather with around 20 rats reportedly roaming free, the Daily Record reports.

Residents first became aware of the rats in May 2020 when they contacted the Angus Council. Referees plan to evaluate the area this week.
Megan Macfarlane said she was out with her partner a little over a month ago when she noticed the rats had returned.
She said, “It wasn’t until the first sunny day of the year that I and my partner were outside, sitting on the balcony, enjoying a Saturday when we heard a noise and only noticed rats everywhere saw about 20.”

Megan said rat sightings have increased since then and villagers have not been able to enjoy their gardens.
She said, “We sat outside having a barbecue on Saturday. It was a nice evening, all the neighbors were outside and this rat has just appeared.
“I don’t know if it was the food smell or whatever, but you can’t really do anything without getting confronted by rats.

“You are obviously becoming more confident and moving around pretty much everywhere.”
Megan said the situation was not getting better. She added, “Environmental health was in my house because I wanted them to see the hardest hit area that is behind our house.
“We went back once or twice to check the bank area like the banks of the creek to see if they are nesting anywhere, but there are no signs.”

Kerr Mawhirt, who also lives in the village, is concerned that the vermin is attacking his grandchildren after he finds one in his garden.
He said, “I had one in my back garden. I had just come back from the beach with my grandson and we just went into the garden and this thing (a rat) just sits and looks at us and they are they are not afraid in front of people, which is rare.

“Obviously it’s a concern about the disease they transmit. I’m more concerned about my grandchildren, but we have to fix something.”
Another neighbor, Pat Clegg, said: “We are all now in the state of not leaving our doors open in case we get unexpected visitors.”
Angus Council said the staff were in contact with local residents.
