Insect-based pet foods are moving closer to reality as companies seek to develop products that appeal to environmentally conscious buyers. It’s no secret that livestock farming is associated with high levels of CO2 emissions. To this end, start-ups and established pet food manufacturers alike are trying to formulate alternatives from insect protein sources such as fly and mealworm larvae. In fact, manufacturers could soon get the Green Light from the Food and Drug Administration to use dried black soldier fly larvae in commercial products: CNBC reports the ingredient is currently moving through the regulatory approval pipeline. It seems like insect-based pet foods will soon be ubiquitous.
