LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The COVID-19 pandemic cannot stop the rodents from running at Spalding University.
The school announced that their annual “Running of the Rodents” will return next week as a live streaming race. The race during finals week coincides with the Kentucky Derby season. It shows rats trained by students on a specially designed route. The winner will receive a trophy and the rodent will receive a garland of fruit-flavored muesli.
The race is one of Spalding’s oldest traditions. It went on for 47 straight years until the pandemic overruled celebrations last year.
Amanda Jewell and her rat won the “Running of the Rodents” in 2019. The race is one of Spalding University’s longest traditions during the final week. April 2019
Spalding said the “Rodent Run” will be broadcast live on Thursday, April 22nd, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Details of the socially distant event will be released closer to the date.
