Indore (Madhya Pradesh): To save the lives of squirrels, the administration of the Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technological Sciences (SGSITS) in Indore has declared a “no-vehicle zone” on its premises, an area normally subject to high traffic and the death of these rodents .

Employees, students and campus residents have to cover a distance of 800 meters either on foot or by bike. Cars or other four-wheelers are not allowed after moving on campus. SGSITS director Rakesh Saxena said squirrel deaths increased after lockdown restrictions on COVID-19 were eased and vehicles rolled onto campus.

“The squirrel population has increased quite a bit during the COVID-19 lockdown and there are around 1,500 on campus. In the front and middle of the campus there are two large streets about half a mile long. Squirrel bodies on the street, “Saxena told ANI.

He added that despite the awareness of the issues among campus residents, squirrels continued to die, forcing campus administration to create a “no-vehicle zone”.
