Fire investigators believe rodents chewing live wires caused a serious fire near Swindon.

The Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) was called this morning at around 3am for reports of a fire on property in Lydiard Green, Lydiard Millicent.

Present were four crews from Royal Wootton Bassett, Westlea, Swindon and Stratton, as well as a Swindon aerial device.

It is said that a fire broke out in a garage before the flames spread to the upper floor and roof of the adjacent house.

At 9:30 a.m., firefighters stayed at the scene to dampen the source of the fire – which means the crews have been fighting the fire for more than six hours.

A DWFRS spokesman said: “Six breathing apparatus wearers used three hose reel nozzles and two main nozzles to extinguish the fire.

“A crew from Swindon stays on site as an observer, takes care of hot spots and cushions as needed.”

A spokesman for the Swindon Fire Station added, “Fire investigators are investigating the cause, but believe rodents chewing live electrical cables started the fire.”
