The cat product brand Catit has launched a new insect-based cat food.

The brand has launched a new line of products called Nuna, which is made from insect protein combined with small amounts of meat and fish. It has featured a range of two nibbles – Real Chicken and Atlantic Herring (rsp: £ 26.99 / 2.27kg) – as well as an insect protein treat SKU (rsp: £ 2.99 / 60g).

The nibbles were made with black soldier fly larvae and were “easy to digest and extremely tasty,” the brand said. The black soldier fly maggots used in the recipe were “full of protein, vitamins, and minerals like omega-6, calcium, phosphorus, and zinc,” he added.

“Not only can cats survive on a meatless diet, but traditional meat production causes more CO2 emissions than all cars combined,” said Paul Trott, Catit’s Marketing Manager.

“With nearly 500 million cats roaming the earth and branded purchases up 20% since the lockdown, brands and consumers can help make a real difference by replacing traditional meat protein in cat food with insect meat protein.”

The launch will be supported by an “extensive, consumer-oriented PR program” as well as in-store support.

It comes just weeks after FMCG giant Mars unveiled Lovebug, a new brand of cat food made entirely from insects. It was claimed that this was the first 100% insect-based cat food launched by a major supplier in the UK. Mars also uses black soldier fly larvae to create Lovebug.
