Drogheda veterinarian Dr. Frank Clarke has developed a novel way to feed dogs nutritiously while helping the environment. The 30-year-old has just launched Omuu, which he calls the “pet food of the future,” as it is made entirely from black soldier fly larvae and contains just the right amount of protein to keep dogs healthy.
Insect protein has also proven to be a highly digestible source of protein for humans. It’s a new type of protein, packed with essential amino acids and perfect for dogs with allergies, ”explains Dr. Frank, the son of Carol and the late Brian Clarke of Rathmullen Road.
“It’s very environmentally friendly and I’ve been working on it for the past two years and now it’s finally ready for sale in Ireland for the first time.”
Frank is a former student of St. Mary’s Diocesan School and a graduate of UCD and has volunteered in countries such as Thailand, India, South America, Peru and Bolivia for many years.
“The idea for the food came to me when pet parents came in and asked what to feed their dogs as there was so much to choose from that I started looking for the best diet for them.” he says.
“That encouraged me to start Omuu. A dog food created with all of my passions in life; Veterinary medicine, nature conservation, environmental protection. “
The food is made from the larvae of the black soldier fly and comes from the Netherlands.
“I chose them because they are a large company with strict quality assurance and a lot of experience in handling insect protein,” he explains. “The first product is for adult dogs aged 1 to 7, every dog loved the taste.”
Omuu comes from the word “Om” and means “one universe”.
“I wanted to create a brand that connects the whole world. Bringing people, animals and nature together, ”he adds. “I have a Rottweiler named Tyson and he’s a huge fan so I hope people in Ireland get used to the idea and for every bag I’ve bought on my website. I will donate € 1 to an environmental organization. “
