Cardon Ellis, Unipest’s chief inspector, walks us through the process of environmentally friendly and biological heat treatment to get rid of bed bugs and eggs. The end goal is to make sure that there isn’t a single bed bug left.

Homeowners contacted Unipest to solve their bed bug problem in their master bedroom. They called for eco-friendly or organic sprays that have been popular for ten to twenty years.

“They’re super effective and don’t require chemicals, and second, they’re super fast,” Cardon Ellis said.

To get an effective four-hour heat treatment for bed bugs, you will need:

  1. Make sure you have a good team.
  2. Make sure you have good equipment like Greentech Heat Solutions.
  3. Do a thorough inspection to find the places that need heat treatment.
  4. Prepare the rooms.

“The first thing you do is actually remove all of the wall plugs and socket covers so the heat can actually get into the walls,” says Cardon Ellis. “Bed bugs tend to hide in these little spots. It is therefore recommended to put all of your belongings in the center of the room. This allows large fans to be placed so that they can “withstand all types of temperatures”.

Ellis has a 50,000 BTU heater from GreenTech that can “burn ten to twenty gallons of propane in one job”. As soon as the room rises above 120 degrees, Ellis counts down the time until his team turns off the heating and proceeds to the next step.

“Basically, the room has to be 120 degrees for four hours, 130 degrees for three hours, or 140 degrees for two hours before you can call the job complete.”

You can also use a thermal imaging camera to see what is going on in the house. Treatment for Ellis is ovicidal, which means that it kills all of the eggs in the house. This gives you a “complete kill”.

Keep in mind that this heat treatment did not use a single drop of chemical in the house as desired.
